“STOP THE MAGICIAN.
STEAL THE BOOK.
SAVE THE FUTURE.
In modern-day New York magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic-the Mageus-live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power-and often their lives.
Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order-and the Brink-before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.
But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.”
I thought this book was fantastic.
I am a person who doesn’t really read fantasy books that are set in the modern world. They usually aren’t my cup of tea. But sometimes along comes a book that takes me by surprise. And this was no exception.
I really enjoyed both of the characters that you got perspectives from. Esta was a really strong female main character. Her personality reminded me a lot of myself in some ways. Acting on impulse and not always following the directions that we are given. I could see so much of myself in her.
I also liked the character of Jack. I think that having a perspective from a character that was from a different time period than Esta was extremely interesting, It shed a new light on what was happening throughout the book.
I also really enjoyed the romance that was incorporated into this story. The relationship between Esta and Jack was just so cute. I liked how the author didn’t make the romance the main focus of the story once it came into play. There was just the perfect amount of it incorporated into the story for my personal taste.
As far as the plot, I think that it was the strongest part of the book. There was a ton of plot twists that I hadn’t seen coming. Plenty of action scenes to keep me on the edge of my seat. Lots of character development (which I think was a key thing in me liking our main characters). I found all of that to be great. However, I did find the plot to be a little slow at times and the book was a little hard for me to get into but overall it was enjoyable.
Overall, this was a great book. I believe this is going to be a standalone novel but I really wish there was going to be more books set in this world. I loved the world so much and I want to see more books like this.
