“JASON HAS A PROBLEM. He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently he has a girlfriend named piper, and his best friend is a guy named Leo. They’re all students in the Wilderness School, a boarding school for “bad kids,” as Leo puts it. What did Jason do to end up here? And where is here exactly? Jason doesn’t know anything-except that something seems very wrong.
PIPER HAS A SECRET> Her father, a famous actor, has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare about him being in trouble. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her her. When a freak storm hits during the school trip, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out, whether she wants to or not.
LEO HAS A WAY WITH TOOLS. When he sees his cabin at Camp Half-Blood, filled with power tools and machine parts, he feels right at home. But there’s weird stuff too-like the curse everyone keeps talking about, and some camper who’s gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist that each of them-including Leo-is related to a god. Does this have anything to do with Jason’s amnesia, or the fact that Leo keeps seeing ghosts?
Join new and old friends from Camp Half-Blood in this thrilling first book in The Heroes of Olympus series.”
I FINALLY picked this book up. And I absolutely loved it.
It has been almost a year since I read the Percy Jackson series. A YEAR. I have been meaning to start Heroes of Olympus for that long and I’m now just getting around to it.
Luckily, this first book did not let me down.
I fell in love with these amazing new main characters. Jason, Piper, and Leo. They were all fantastic in their own way. Jason I thought was a great leader. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that he is the son of Zeus (aka Jupiter in Roman Mythology). I actually liked how throughout the book he is suffering from amnesia and trying to figure exactly who he is. I think it played a key part in the building of the story. Piper reminded me a lot of both myself as well as Annabeth in the Percy Jackson series. Definitely not the girly girl kind of person and more of a tomboy type of person. Until we found out who her godly parent was, I would have never have guessed that she was the daughter of Aphrodite. She is definitely someone I want to know more about throughout the rest of the series. Leo was a great character as well. He was really funny and made me laugh the most out of all the characters. All of these characters were truly fantastic and I can’t wait to see them develop throughout the rest of the series.
I loved the blend of both Roman and Greek mythology in this book. Prior to reading this book, I didn’t know much about Roman mythology. I knew some of the gods but not a whole ton compared to their Greek counterparts. While reading the book, I made a guide in the notes section on my phone and wrote down the gods using both their Greek and Roman names as well as what they controlled. It was cool to see how the gods differed in personality in their two different forms. I found it really cool. It will be interesting to see what they are like in the rest of the books.
While most of the book focused on the mission that Piper, Jason, and Leo were on, I couldn’t help but think in the back of my mind about the mission that Annabeth was on. Trying to find Percy. I wanted to know were Percy was from the minute we found out that he was missing. Hopefully we will find out in the next couple of books because I want to know right now.
The only problem that I had with this book is that I found it a little slow at times. I wanted just a little more action. When I read Percy Jackson, there was a ton of action that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout each book. However, in this book, I didn’t get as much of that as I wanted. Hopefully, in my personal opinion, that the action will get more intense throughout the rest of the series.
Overall, this book was fantastic. I still can’t believe it took me almost a year to read but I don’t regret it at all. I can’t wait to continue on with the series and see all the adventures that the characters will go on.
