“The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon-when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach-an “outlander”-in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life…and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire…and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.”

This book is definitely worth the hype that it has received. It was absolutely amazing.

This book was one of those books that everyone in the book reviewing community had either read or had heard of. I bought this book back in July at my local Barnes & Noble but never really had the motivation to pick it up. I finally did pick it up at the end of last month and boy, after reading it for almost a month, I don’t regret it one bit.

The first thing that I loved about this book was the setting in which it took place. I have always had a love for Scotland. I have always wanted to go there since I was a kid. Reading this novel just brought back all the love I had for it. I learned so much about the country itself as well as the Gaelic culture. I hope to visit Scotland in the near future so I can take in all of the sights, sounds, and culture for myself.

Claire was an amazing character to read about. I loved reading from her perspective. Seeing things through her eyes. She had all of the qualities that I look for in a well written main character. While reading, I almost felt like I was there. That I was in her place. The way that the author wrote her was fantastic. From beginning to end, she was an all around great character and I can’t wait to see what happens to her in the future books.

I LOVED JAMIE. He was such a great character. I think he is the kind of guy that is just perfect for Claire. Their personalities complemented each other so well.  He was another character that I think the author just wrote perfectly. He was a great love interest. Everything about him was just perfect. Like I said before when talking about Claire, I really cannot wait to see what happens to him in the future books.

The romance between Jamie and Claire was something that I had not expected when going into this book. I think it was the one thing that I had mixed feelings about throughout most of the book. There were scenes that I absolutely loved between the two of them, especially towards the end. However, there were some scenes that their relationship felt a little to forced for my liking. The sex scenes were particularly not my favorite but there were a few that I did like. Overall, as stated before, I do enjoy them as a couple. Seeing the sacrifices that Jamie was willing to make for Claire almost brought me to tears in a couple of chapters. It will be interesting to see how their relationship blooms in the rest of the series.

Overall, this really was a fantastic book. It was totally worth the hype that surrounds it for me. It will be a book that I probably will never forget reading. I ABSOLUTELY plan on continuing on with the series. I think I will read maybe in the spring or summer but nevertheless, nothing will stop me from continuing on. I also want to check out the TV show and see how good it is. Hopefully it will be just as amazing.
