“What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths—until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.”

This was a truly fantastic book. I can totally see why this is such a hyped up series!

The setting of this book was something I have not seen in any of the dystopian books that I have read. It was really cool to see that it doesn’t really take place in one part of (what used to be) the western part of the United States. I liked how the characters moved from one part of that section of the country to another. That is the great thing about dystopian books, the setting is never the same in all the books!

The characters of June and Day were really interesting. We have June who grew up in the higher class in the society and she is a prodigy. Then we have Day (or Daniel) who grew up in the lower class and is a legend for being the most wanted criminal in the society. I think it was just really interesting to see the story told from these two characters perspectives. Getting to see both sides of the story.

Besides the plot, the romance between June and Day was really amazing to see develop over the course of the book. From the time they met at the Skiz fight, I knew there was going to be some sort of relationship developing between them. I think the best part was that June didn’t know that the boy who saved her from that Skiz fight was Day, the boy she had been lead to believe killed her brother. When they shared their first kiss and June figured out it was day, I didn’t know if this romance would continue. I am very glad that they ended up together in the end.

The action in this book is also spectacular. Unlike most of the dystopian books I have read, they weren’t really trying to overthrow the government. June was trying to save Day after finding out that he is not the boy who killed her brother. That scene was amazing to read and to play out in my head. I was shocked when Day’s brother, John, sacrificed his life so June and Day could escape from the scene of Day’s execution.

Overall I really enjoyed reading this book. I think it would make either an amazing TV show or a really cool movie. The plot of it is just something that I could totally see working out for some live adaptation.I would go see it in a heartbeat. I can’t wait to continue on with the rest of the series!
