“Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mythical beasts still roam the wild and remote areas, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinn still perform their magic. For humans, it’s an unforgiving place, especially, if you’re poor, orphaned or female.

Amani Al’Hize is all three. She’s a gifted gunslinger with perfect aim, but she can’t shoot her way out of Dustwalk, the back-country town where she’s destined to wind up wed or dead.

Then she meets Jin, a rakish foreigner, in a shooting contest, and sees him as the perfect escape route. But though she’s spent years dreaming of leaving Dustwalk, she never imagined she’d gallop away on a mythical horse- or that it would take a foreign fugitive to show her the heart of the desert she thought she knew.

Rebel of the Sands reveals what happens when a dream deferred explodes- in the fires of rebellion, the smolder of romantic passion, and the all-consuming inferno of a girl, at long last, embracing her power.”

When I read the synopsis of this book, I thought it sounded really interesting. I loved the idea behind the story. When I heard it was the book club that I am a part of book choice for the month of June I was really excited. I had very high expectations for it.

However I was very let down by it.

The minute I started reading it, I was very confused. The opening few pages just felt like there was something missing. It felt like the author had put the book together perfectly but left out some details in the very beginning.

The aspect that got me really excited about this book was the magic. I thought that I would be reading about it through the second and third chapter to the end of the book. However, I discovered that they were not really talking about it at all.

Ultimately, I did not finish this book. I heard that it got better as the story goes on but I just could not take it anymore. I only read 36 pages of it before I gave up on it.

One think that I liked about this book was the writing style. I enjoyed it a lot. Even though I probably won’t read the rest of this series, I will give the author another try if she puts out any other books in the future.
